program in the global marketplace today – the
Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®). Columbia was the first decorative
hardwood and plywood and veneer manufacturer to secure a FSC chain-of-custody certificate
through SmartWood over a decade ago in 1998.
Columbia offers the industry's most complete line of certified decorative hardwood
panel products which carry the FSC ecolabel. Unlike other forest certification programs,
the FSC is the only certification program endorsed by the internationally recognized
US Green Building Council's LEED® Green Building Rating System requirements.
Decorative panel product choices include a broad selection of certified or controlled
decorative veneers laminated to certified veneer core, particleboard and MDF substrates.

Abundant, Reliable Supply... a Decade in the Making
Since 1998 Columbia has not only built the most extensive decorative hardwood plywood
product line, but also the means to deliver these panel products through the largest
hardwood plywood distribution network in North America. With this impressive aggregation
of "A-List" chain-of-custody hardwood plywood distributors,
securing FSC certified panel products is much easier.
With eight manufacturing facilities and one international brokerage group certified
under a
Multisite certificate in the United States [SW-COC-000065] and two mills
under a separate certificate in Canada [SW-COC-000424], Columbia
customers are offered an abundant, reliable supply of certified wood products.
Certified Plywood Substrates available with PureBond® assembly technology
The Certified Wood panels Columbia manufactures are invoiced as
FSC Pure, FSC Mixed % or FSC Mixed Credit. Panels are manufactured to
stringent North American ANSI HP-1-2009 standards.
FSC-certified or controlled decorative veneers can be laminated to FSC-certified
veneer core, phenolic particleboard, phenolic MDF or pMDI-bonded MDF substrates
with the patented Columbia PureBond formaldehyde-free lamination process. These
substrates will vary by the wood sourcing "baskets" Columbia draws from in North
America. For example, veneer core construction is available in aspen, poplar or
western softwood species depending on mill location. While nominal finished thickness
of 1/4", 1/2" and 3/4" are the most common, Columbia also specializes in many other
thicknesses, including metric to meet those "one-of-a-kind" project requirements.
Certified Decorative Veneers
Columbia's decorative hardwood veneer mills manufacture FSC certified veneer in
birch and maple species. These certified veneers are available in A, B and C face
grades together with corresponding veneer back grades of 1, 2 or 3. These rotary
veneers can be internally sourced by any of our plywood mills (subject to lead times).
Limited sap appearance grades are also available. These veneer grades are excellent
for fixtures, institutional furniture and case goods that are being specified in
today's LEED projects.
Columbia can also source FSC-certified plain sliced veneers. If you do not see a
