For several years, Columbia Forest Products has been a proud sponsor of Studio 804, a not-for-profit organization that gives Master’s architecture students from the University of Kansas hands-on construction experience — something that’s often missing in traditional architecture education.

It’s rare for architecture students to gain real-world building experience before graduation. Without it, many young architects can feel unprepared when it comes time to collaborate with contractors and navigate the practical side of design.

That’s why Professor Dan Rockhill founded Studio 804. Each year, he leads students through every stage of the process — from purchasing land and drafting plans to securing permits and managing construction. The result is more than just a finished building; it’s a comprehensive education that bridges the gap between design and execution.

For 2025, the class selected a project at 1040 New York Street in Lawrence, Kansas. Their goal: to design and construct a sustainable, modern home that blends seamlessly with the neighborhood while showcasing distinctive, forward-thinking design elements.

To help bring their vision to life, Columbia Forest Products provided more than 75 sheets of Appalachian Traditions™ plywood in the finish “Hampton Maple.” The material’s natural warmth and brightness create a welcoming focal point in the kitchen and stairway, while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic. The same beautiful panels continue throughout the loft and accessory dwelling unit, unifying the spaces with a consistent, natural tone.

Through projects like this, Columbia Forest Products is proud to support the next generation of architects — those who not only design but build their vision from the ground up.
